The Impact of Trauma -Making Space for Learning
Childhood trauma affects the learning, social- emotional wellbeing, behaviour, physical well-being and relationships of our children and young people. Up to 40% of children will have experienced a traumatic event or series of events. These traumatised children and young people are in our schools and living with the consequences on a daily basis. What we are learning is that there are ways of understanding and helping students overcome the impacts of trauma.
The Trauma Informed Schools Project involves schools attending professional learning to understand the impacts of trauma and brain development. Schools learn strategies that can lessen the effect of trauma and they undertake whole school planning to promote this support. Schools can also choose to undertake action research where they investigate ways of improving outcomes for students and staff.
