Position Details

Our Lady of Mercy Primary School, Girrawheen is seeking a dedicated and committed V-EALD teacher with a thorough understanding of effective EAL/D practices. The applicant must have experience working with EALD children and will support a culture in which every student is recognised as having the ability to learn.  

The Virtual-English as an Additional Language or Dialect (V-EALD) Support Program has been developed in response to the challenges associated with the provision of relevant EAL/D support for CEWA schools. The purpose of the V-EALD Support Program is to support students to develop foundational levels of Standard Australian English to be able to access core Learning Areas.  

The V-EALD Teacher will be part of a dynamic Team and will be supported by the EAL/D Team at CEWA for the 0.08FTE virtual teaching portion of the role and the remaining 0.2FTE will be fully dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy Primary School. The V-EALD Teacher will be an integral part of the host school and will be expected to work with small groups of EALD children to support learning against individual EALD Plans, lead professional development, provide advice on resources and programs and work collaboratively with the school’s EALD Coordinator to monitor and assess EALD student learning.

This position is being advertised as temporary through to 31 December 2025 with strong possibility to become ongoing in line with Catholic Education commitment to engaging and supporting students from non-English speaking backgrounds.

The successful applicant will be required to deliver virtual lessons to students daily and will:

  • ideally have extensive experience teaching EAL/D students in a mainstream setting or in an IEC.
  • be able to demonstrate strong awareness and understanding of cultural and linguistic diverse practices, as well as a responsive approach to the various issues faced by migrants in Australia.
  • have knowledge of second language acquisition principles, the EAL/D Progress Maps and the WA Curriculum.
  • have the capacity to lead, coach and mentor staff to address the academic and social needs of EAL/D students.
  • have specialist EAL/D qualifications, such as in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Second language Acquisition or similar, or at the very least, a willingness to commence such study.
  • have the experience or demonstrate the capacity to quickly acquire the skills necessary to deliver engaging and dynamic virtual programs.

Selection Criteria

  • Ability to plan and deliver virtual EAL/D specialist lessons.
  • Undertake initial assessment of EAL/D students based on Progress Maps.
  • Plan for and deliver the various V-EALD programs based on students’ needs.
  • Development of resources and materials for EAL/D teaching and support as well as to support enrolling schools.
  • Regularly monitor students’ progress based on their EAL/D Learning Plan.
  • Liaise with schools to plan and implement EAL/D Learning Plans across learning areas.
  • Support schools to report for EAL/D students in all learning areas.
  • Work closely with CEWA EAL/D Consultants in the organisation, planning and delivery of the program.

Qualifications Required

  • Qualification as a four-year trained teacher.
  • Accreditation to Teach in a Catholic school (or willing to acquire).
